Sculpture study: Eve, in plaster

Landscape: Moonlit

Interior: Untitled (Via Luna)

I painted this in the summer of my second year at the academy (2007), biggest painting i had attempted at the time. I would model for the summer portrait painting course during the morning, sleep during the rest of the day, and go to Via Luna (the sculpture campus) after 7 when the sun would be going down. Paint all night, and then so on. The sculpture is by Cody Swanson, it is of Eve (there was a companion piece, Adam). I was a big admirer of sculpture at the time, still am- without trying to sound pretentious... for me there is a very universal beauty in the form of good figurative sculpture, this painting is really about being an admirer of that. It's a kind of compliment, I think. The time when I was painting this my routine was very tiring, but I was a very happy man.

Still Life- Miniature: In Blue

Self-Portrait: Gender

This painting is an answer to a painting by Simona Dolci, a good friend and colleague of mine, with the same title but focusing on the feminine aspect. I wanted to produce the most "male" painting i could.

Still Life-Miniature: JUG

I was inspired to begin painting miniature still lives by a painting of Cornelia Hernes'. She gifted it to me on my birthday (at my strong urging) and i have treasured it ever since. I began to consider that i could accomplish the same goals (the study of color, composition, light effect) without producing a life-size painting of the given objects. There is a certain charm to a object painted at a quarter of it's actual size.

Figure painting demo

I had the opportunity, this August to work with a great group of painters/teachers in miami. Abdon Romero, his wife Sonya Hidalgo, and Olivier Casse organised a demonstration of the sight-size method as applied to figure painting at their studios/school. When the time came to commence the demo, i was faced with a full house... 38 very curious and enthusiastic individuals interested in academic painting! It was my thorough pleasure to introduce these ideas and processes to them all and i look foreward to my next trip to Miami- and another chance to work with Oliver, Abdon, and Sonya.

Cast Studies: Student Work

Two studies: done one after the other, interesting how plaster looks in charcoal and in paint.  Is the study of form served better in paint, or in charcoal?  Or is the same effect achieved only with a broader scale of values?

Portrait Sketch: Tonn, Kendric

Recently I convinced Kendric (F.A.A. student) to sit for a few hours in my new studio here at the Via Fratelli Bandiera studios of the Florence Academy of Art.

However unfortunately he will be continuing his studies in Sweden next year rather than here in temperate old Tuscany. Arrivederci.
